How Does Waterproofing Work

Most people who are new to renovating want to know how does the membrane work? How will this blue stuff stop my walls being damaged? Well on the ball are here to break it down for you

The waterproofing membrane is designed to catch & stop any water that penetrates through the surface of the shower tiles and grout lines.  It acts much like a bucket under your shower and will protect the surrounding areas of your dwelling from water damage.

The diagram below is the best example of how waterproofing membrane works. Represented as bold black the (sealant) can be seen as a type of shield for the concrete into the floor waste. This is why sealing around the drain is one of the most crucial parts of waterproofing. Make sure if you do it yourself or you hire someone to do it that they or you place high attention to this area as the majority of all the water will be forced to this one spot.

Every home is different with some have high degrees of movement such as homes in hilly areas, fibro homes or even if you are creating a walk in the shower they are all different.     Hi what is the proper way to waterproof a tile shower? every contractor i talk to has a different answer and me and the wife are lost to what is right and what is wrong. We have had a leak for ages and we are scared of spending all the money and not get the result we want.

    1. Hi Lewis, thanks for the questions. Depending on where you live us being in Perth, Western Australia every country has a different waterproofing method as well as individual people. Australia waterproofing standards are not very high for different reasons. Really before 2000 it was the wild west of waterproofing with the standard being whatever works for you. The reality is we have a few key methods that are crucial. Preparing the area now that means removing anything that would affect the membrane including dust, priming the area to allow whatever waterproofing to hold is crucial you don’t want it coming away, application of at least two coats of the waterproofing at a high level that allows for where water will practically go in the shower the floor being the crucial spot, lastly dry allow it to dry and dry and dry if you don’t you will have a breach and be back to square one.
